Sumatra Mandheling — Single Origin
A beautifully balanced and smooth single origin from the Lake Toba region of Sumatra. This medium roast delivers a rounded body, gentle citric acidity, and notes of dark chocolate, blackcurrant and grapefruit, layered over earthy spice and herbal depth. Grown at 1000–1400 MASL and processed using the traditional wet hulling method, it’s a rich, satisfying coffee that shines as espresso and performs exceptionally well with milk.

Behind that finish, you’ll also find earthy, herbal and spice notes, plus a rounded body and gentle citric acidity. The profile shows lemon, earth, herbal and spice notes upfront followed by a rounded body and citric acidity with a dark chocolate, blackcurrant and grapefruit finish.

This coffee is smooth, rich and balanced, with enough fruit and brightness to stop it feeling heavy. It leans into the classic Sumatra character people look for: body, texture, spice and dark chocolate, with a cleaner edge from the citrus and blackcurrant finish. The profile also notes sweetness, mild fruitiness, creamy heavy texture and a bittersweet, peppery finish.
Why this coffee stands out
Sumatra has a long coffee-growing history, and much of its coffee is produced around the Lake Toba region. This lot is selected from a specific area with a high percentage of old-growth Sumatra varietal trees, with the aim of delivering a more consistent flavour profile throughout the year. The lot is sourced through our partners that are sustainable Café Practices certified and work to maintain integrity in supply and fair treatment of farmers.
That matters, because with a coffee like this, consistency is part of the value. You want the classic Sumatra richness and texture, but you also want confidence that what you loved in one bag will still be there in the next.

We’ve roasted this coffee to highlight its rounded body, chocolate depth and smooth finish, while preserving the lively citrus edge that gives it structure.

Espresso recipe
Dose: 20g
Yield: 40g
Time: 28–32 seconds
Ratio: 1:2
This should give you a balanced espresso with body, dark chocolate richness and enough acidity to keep the cup bright. Adjust finer if the shot runs too fast and tastes sour; adjust coarser if it runs too slow and tastes bitter.
Milk-based coffee
Best for flat whites, lattes and cappuccinos where the rounded body and chocolate character can carry through milk.
Plunger / French press
Start around 65g per litre, then adjust to taste.
Stovetop
Use a slightly coarser espresso grind than your machine setting and pull it off the heat as soon as brewing finishes to preserve sweetness and clarity.

A little too citric and sour for my tastes (could definitely be user error). As someone who likes thunderchild and stargazer but does not like enterprise. Fully aware tastes are personal, don't regret giving thisba go, just adding another data point for people with same taste as me :) (aeropress and not a coffee connoisseur)
I love this Sumatra coffee. I've been buying it for years and can't fault it.
I drink espresso and light roast long blacks and medium roast 80+ rated flat whites with organic unhomogenised full cream milk from only single origin beans. I buy the beans I roast and buy roasted to suit those tastes. This bean drinks well as an espresso but even better as a flat white with smooth full bodied caramel chocolate to dark choc flavour with a slight grapefruit finish. Works best with a high extraction basket in my experience with interesting taste variations from 800 to 1800 rpm grind speeds.

This is the first time I tried the Sumatra Single Origin. I enjoy it as a flat white. I had to dial in the grind to get the desired crema, howver I am still fine-tuning to get the optimal result. All in all, I love the taste, and as always, Airjo produces a consistent premium coffee roast. Highly recommend.

Perhaps I am swayed by the previous Sumatra Blend....which was superb in complexity and depth... The present single source don't seem to quite have the same fullness...
This is a very well balanced coffee with a beautiful fragrance but also besides being rich and full, it has quite nice high notes and just a little bit of acidity coming through. Very addictive and definitely recommend you to try this one. It was quite different to other coffees I've had and it just hit the spot without being overpowering yet not being too weak. I would describe it as a great all rounder that being a little bit more up market in its flavour and after taste. As usual Airjo ship this out super fast with that high standard of customer service. A great company to deal with

It was more "äcidic" and didn't seem to have the same depth of flavour.
I am yet to open my latest delivery, so fingers crossed, it will be back to my favourite brew.
I buy on subscription a kilo at a time. Product is delivered a couple of days after roasting and is consistently of high quality. No adjustment is required to my equipment to produce a great coffee. Love it!

Really enjoying my first coffee experience with Airjo coffee. I chose the Sumatra Blend as a safe choice, for an alround morning coffee that was not too strong or overpowering! I will definitely be back and might try some other blends as this one is so smooth, aromatic and just has complex overtones that will make you enjoy your coffee and just be able to relax while you enjoy its very rich and smooth character!
